    Cogley also had an inkling of Finney still being alive when Finney's daughter came to his office to try to stop the court martial.

    Nearly 60 years ago this episode aired! We fast forward to present day. And the computer age has advanced although we don't have talking computers for the most part we do have robots and AI THAT LEAD TO THE VERY FIRST VALANDTORINN AT UNIVERSITY OF MASS! GIVING THE GRADUATION SPEECH FOR THE CLASS OF 2024. MOST CURIOUS EVENT. WE USE COMPUTERS TO HELP SOLVE PROBLEMS MONEY AND MEDICAL WISE EVEN DOING SURGERY FLYING PLANES DRIVING AUTOS. I BELIEVE WHOLE HEARTY THAT WE AS A NATION AND CITIZENS OF THIS PLANET CALLED EARTH HAVE BECOME LAZY RELYING ALMOST TOTALLY ON LETTING THE COMPUTER DO OUR THINKING PROCESS FOR US NO MORE NEED TO USE THE BEST COMPUTER A PERSON BRAIN TO THINK THINGS THROUGH SOLVE PROBLEMS BUT NOW JUST PUSH A BUTTON TYPE IN ON THE KEYBOARD BING BANG WE GET THE ANSWER MEANWHILE OUR BRAIN POWER SLOWLY BUT SURE TURNING INTO MUSH INSTEAD OF THE COMPUTER BEING A HELP TURNED IT INTO THE MASTER OR A PUPPET MASTER IF YOU LIKE WE ARE NOW ITS DUMMY THINK ABOUT IT. AS YOU SIT DOWN TO THAT KEY BORAD NEXT TIME

    Ok ... Ok ... One of the better episode! But before Spock runs in with suspicions of the ship's computers being tampered with ... Mr Cogley is ready to throw his arm up and admit he had "nothing else" to bring to Captain Kirk's defense??? I know that was just the story line ... But that was weak!!! Spock doesn't play chess ... Corporal Kick is working on some freighter now!

    Really the best roll of "Cogley" is in "Shane" opposite "Wison" (Jack Palance) ua-cam.com/video/u4qQtWjXPv4/v-deo.html "Who'd they name you after, If you'd know" (In other words, you don't know who your father is.)

    It's kind of foreshadowing of our own time. With the advancement of CGI, at what point does a computer video become unreliable? We're not there, yet, but we will be.

    Cogley is supposed to be a great lawyer. He knows that the case against Kirk devolves solely on the computer log. Yet he doesn't do anything to suppress, or even question, the computer's evidence until the end of the hearing, until Spock and McCoy tell him what Spock found out about the memory banks. He should have had the computer tested himself, first thing.

    He couldn't alter the mission logs without impacting the chess program? Those kind of seem like they would be different components of the system.

    I have always found it strange that Spock had to program the computer to play Tri-Dimensional chess as popular as the game is in the 23rd century you would think the ships computer would already have it

    Mind you if you made a chess program as good as yourself, you could easily beat it unless it was capable of learning as well.

    This is brilliantly done, speaking to the audience with intelligence, but putting story and understanding over the reality of the situation. One of the many, many reasons why this show is among a very small group of brilliance in all forms of television. Like pizza, when it's bad, it's still pretty good. But when Star Trek is good (a premium example right here), it's alchemical, and opens minds.

    who is gunned down by the hired gun Jack Wilson, played to wicked perfection by Jack Palance. One could make a serious argument that Cook Jr was the finest character actor to appear in the Star Trek series. Everything he appeared in was thoroughly enthralling.

  • @donschmidt8203
    @donschmidt8203 2 роки тому

    Elisha Cook Jr is outstanding in his role as defense attorney. Old time movie buffs remember him for his roles in the classics The Maltese Falcon and Shane. In both films he was a centerpiece, as the obnoxious hired gun Wilmer in Maltese Falcon and Stonewall Torrey the homesteader in Shane. The way Wilmer and Sam Spade, played by the great Humphrey Bogart play off each other in the Maltese Falcon is priceless. Like his contemporary Peter Lorre, Cooks character is the perfect patsy for the uber cool Bogart. His performance as Torrey in Shane is even more noteworthy because he portrays an overly proud southern homesteader

    He could have learned something he did not know since he programmed it and saying impossible to beat a computer at chess is not logical as can be set on different levels I have beaten them more than five times just not at the highest levels. I talked to someone that said he never beat a computer at chess I asked if he set it at lowest level he said he never beat it at lowest level either he played a machine with software designed only for higher levels or he was terrible at chess.
